Vermont Set to Launch Mobile Sports Betting in Early 2024
Vermont sports enthusiasts have a reason to celebrate as Governor Phil Scott announced the upcoming launch of mobile sports betting in the state, slated for January 11, 2024.
This initiative places Vermont among the nearly three dozen states that have legalized online sports betting.
Selection of Operators and Legislative Background
The Vermont Department of Liquor and Lottery has chosen DraftKings, FanDuel, and Fanatics Sportsbook to operate the state’s mobile sports wagering platforms.
Governor Scott, who has been a proponent of legalizing sports wagering for several years, expressed satisfaction with the realization of this initiative. He signed the bill legalizing online sports betting in Vermont in June.
A key aspect of this development is the emphasis on consumer protection and responsible gaming. The Department of Liquor and Lottery, in collaboration with the Department of Mental Health, will annually report to the Legislature on the impact of sports betting on problem gambling. Additionally, operators are required to submit a responsible gaming plan to the state, including details on problem gambling materials, resources for bettors, player limits, and self-exclusion programs.
Governor Scott anticipates that sports betting operations could generate up to $7 million in revenue for Vermont during its first full year.
Department of Liquor and Lottery’s Role
Wendy Knight, Commissioner of the Department of Liquor and Lottery, expressed enthusiasm about offering sports wagering in Vermont, partnering with leading companies in the industry. She highlighted the opportunity for sports fans to engage in wagering activities responsibly.
To facilitate a smooth launch, a pre-registration period begins immediately, allowing the operators to engage in marketing activities and pre-register players ahead of the January launch.
