Terry Rozier Remains Under Federal Probe for Alleged Betting Scheme Ties
Miami Heat guard Terry Rozier, a 31-year-old NBA veteran, remains at the center of an ongoing federal investigation into his alleged involvement with an illegal sports betting ring, which is linked to potential match-fixing.

Six months after The Wall Street Journal first reported the probe in January 2025, NBA insider Chris Haynes confirmed on July 15, 2025, that Rozier “has not been cleared of any wrongdoing and remains under federal investigation” for a potential gambling scheme.
Despite an earlier claim by ESPN’s Shams Charania suggesting Rozier was cleared, Haynes’ update clarified the investigation’s active status.
Focus on the March 2023 Game
The investigation centers on a March 23, 2023, game between the Charlotte Hornets, Rozier’s team at the time, and the New Orleans Pelicans.
Rozier played just 9 minutes and 34 seconds, scoring five points, grabbing four rebounds, and recording two assists before exiting due to a reported sore right foot.
He did not return and missed the Hornets’ final eight games of the season. Federal investigators flagged heavy bets placed on Rozier’s “under” prop bets, wagers predicting he would fall below statistical thresholds like points or rebounds.
These bets, detected by U.S. Integrity, suggest the gambling ring had inside information about his early exit, prompting sportsbooks to halt Rozier-related wagers hours before the game. While the NBA’s own review found no rule violations, the federal probe continues to explore potential misconduct.
Connection to Jontay Porter’s Case
The investigation ties Rozier to the same illegal betting network implicated in the case of former Toronto Raptors player Jontay Porter, who received a lifetime NBA ban in April 2024 for deliberately underperforming to benefit bettors.
Authorities suspect some individuals involved in Porter’s scheme used inside information to place large wagers against Rozier in 2023.
Porter, who pleaded guilty to conspiracy to commit wire fraud, manipulated his participation in games to ensure “under” bets hit, a tactic investigators are examining in Rozier’s case.
The broader probe also involves other players, including Detroit Pistons’ Malik Beasley, for similar betting irregularities during the 2023-24 season.
Rozier’s Silence and Financial Questions
Rozier, who has earned over $100 million in his decade-long NBA career, has not publicly addressed the allegations, following his attorney’s advice.
His lawyer, Jim Trusty, stated, “We are aware of the NBA’s 2023 investigation which determined there was absolutely no wrongdoing by Mr. Rozier and we are confident that the ongoing government investigation will arrive at the exact same conclusion.”
Reports of Rozier’s alleged financial difficulties have raised eyebrows, with some questioning why a high-earning player would risk his career.
