NFL Partners with ICRG to Study College Gambling, Fund Youth Prevention
The NFL is teaming up with a leading research group to tackle gambling risks among college kids and fund tools to keep younger fans safe.

A $600,000 Pledge for Research
National Football League (NFL) announced a three-year, $600,000 partnership with the International Center for Responsible Gaming (ICRG) to dig into gambling behaviors among college athletes and students. The NFL Foundation’s funding will back independent, peer-reviewed studies to uncover how these groups use online sports betting, pinpoint risk factors, and measure impacts.
Early data suggests athletes face higher gambling risks, but solid numbers are scarce. The ICRG’s Scientific Advisory Board will pick grant recipients after rigorous reviews, aiming for data to shape prevention strategies and policies. “We’re proud to advance research that can drive meaningful solutions,” said Anna Isaacson, NFL senior vice president of social responsibility.
Beyond research, the NFL’s funding will update the ICRG’s “Talking with Children About Gambling” resources, giving parents, coaches, and teachers practical tips to curb youth gambling exposure. These materials, available online and sent to schools, youth sports groups, and community programs nationwide, aim to spark early conversations.
Why College Gambling Matters
College athletes, often under financial and social pressure, are a growing concern as online betting apps like FanDuel and DraftKings proliferate.
A 2024 NCAA survey found 13% of Division I athletes showed signs of problem gambling, up from 8% in 2019. Students, too, are vulnerable, with easy access to betting platforms.
The NFL-ICRG research will explore usage patterns, addiction triggers, and mental health links, filling gaps in current data.
The ICRG deal adds to the NFL’s responsible gambling push, joining ties with the National Council on Problem Gambling and Responsible Gambling Council. The league already runs campaigns like “Stick to Your Game Plan,” urging fans to set betting limits. Isaacson’s team works with teams and players to promote safe habits, while the NFL bans athletes from betting on league games. Arthur Paikowsky, ICRG president, lauded the NFL’s focus: “This critical research targeting young adults will support a safer gambling environment”.
